BIO
I’ve travelled a multidisciplinary path to my current role as Professor of Marketing and co-Founder/co-Leader of Deakin’s Better Consumption Lab. The thread that connects my undergraduate studies in Environmental Science to my PhD in Health Psychology to my current work, is my preoccupation with the pursuit of social goods; outcomes that simultaneously benefit individual wellbeing, society, and the economy.
It’s tempting to link ideas of the social good with the function of government, but the brutality and short-sightedness that marks our current politics makes the types of changes needed to sustainably safeguard our futures much more difficult to achieve. For this reason, much of my research is focused on developing what could be characterised as market-based solutions that deliver social goods, especially in the realms of sustainability and public health. Here I’m able to draw on my methodologically rich background to try to understand and develop consumer insights that can help develop market-based solutions (whether products or services) that will be positive for sustainability and health-related outcomes while also delivering tangible value propositions to consumers.
Consumer behaviour’s only one half of a market-based solution, which also needs to offer a tangible value proposition to the companies and organisations that would need to manufacture/deliver these products/services. So, my research seeks to develop win/win/win solutions that benefit the organisations that provide and the consumers that utilise, while providing a social good that benefits everyone.
My current research revolves around three main foci:
1) Investigating means to develop and accelerate the uptake of renewable energy technologies
2) Working with local communities affected by large-scale initiatives, like wind farms
3) Developing market-based approaches to the endemic social problems of inadequate nutrition and low levels of physical activity.
