BIO

Simon Grennan is a Lecturer in Visual Arts at Deakin University where he teaches contemporary art practice. Along with specialisations in painting, drawing, and printmaking, his creative interests extend to algorithms, sculptural practices, abstraction, data visualisation, participatory art and cross-disciplinary research collaboration. Grennan's core creative and scholarly interest lies in the moment of transformation whereby quantitative material becomes qualitative experience. His practice-led research on landscape as an inquiry parallel to, and cognate with, consciousness research is one such expression of this interest. Grennan’s ongoing project Drawing with Algorithms explores the generative potential of rule-based procedures as a methodology for of combining or re-figuring subjective and non-subjective processes. This drawing-based work has a strong participatory aspect in which rule-based procedures both augment and complicate the artist-researcher's interactions with people, communities, objects, and places. That work often redesigns and transforms quantitative data collection methods into qualitative and embodied creative experiences.  Grennan holds a PhD in Visual Arts and a Masters degree in Adult Education specialising in the tertiary sector.
