BIO
I work as a Professor of Behavioural Epidemiology within the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN), School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, Deakin University. My research aims to understand how aspects of the neighbourhood built environment may influence physical activity across the lifespan. I have a particular research interest in the role of parks and public open spaces and how features of parks may be associated with visitation and park-based physical activity.
I completed my PhD at Deakin University in 2008, which examined factors influencing children’s active free play. I have been supported by a National Heart Foundation of Australia Future Leader Fellowship, a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Early Career Fellowship, a National Heart Foundation of Australia Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, and a National Heart Foundation of Australia Postgraduate Research Scholarship. I led an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery project (ProjectPARK) and an ARC Linkage project (REVAMP). I am currently the Chair of the Low-Risk Ethics Committee for the Faculty of Health (HEAG-H). I am currently Academic Lead of Stakeholder Engagement in IPAN, Co-Chair of the Special Interest Group Committee for the Asia-Pacific Society for Physical Activity (ASPA), and Co-Chair of the World Urban Parks, Children play and nature Committee. For more details on my current research activities, please go to the My Research tab.
