BIO
Before joining Deakin's School of Education, Piper worked as a secondary
school history teacher and in the TAFE sector in policy and management roles.
These professional experiences has instilled a life-long commitment to
supporting high quality, universal public education accessible to all as
imperative to the flourishing of a strong and cohesive civil society. Piper's
research and teaching interests investigate aspects of the socio-political
history of education in Australia, often examining the influence and impact of
social class on the experience of education at all levels. She is a keen
acolyte of Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy and works in her teaching and
reseach to realise a human, student-centred approach to all aspects of
education and schooling.
Piper currently sits on two community organisation boards of management. She is Chair of Future Connect, the Local Learning and Employment Network for Brimbank and Melton in Melbourne's outer west and has recently been elected to the board of Adult Learning Australia.
