BIO
Originally trained as an Indonesian linguist and educator, Michael Hatherell completed his PhD at Deakin University in International Politics. He has experience teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate level in the disciplines of international relations, strategic studies and political science. Michael was Deakin’s Academic Director at the Australian Defence College between 2017 and 2022. Michael is now Deputy Director of the Centre for Future Defence and National Security and Head of Teaching and Learning.
Michael's research interests centre on the nature of political competition and conflict at the domestic and international level, and especially the role of political ideas and narratives. Michael is the author of two books (‘Political Representation in Indonesia: The Emergence of the Innovative Technocrats’ and ‘The Struggle for the National Narrative in Indonesia') as well as numerous journal articles and book chapters. He has also published in key national security community publications on populist narratives and ideational power. Michael is a founding editorial board member for the Australian Journal of Defence and Strategic Studies (AJDSS) and a regular contributor to specialised short courses run in Defence and the national security community.
