BIO
Dr. Bahareh Nakisa is a Senior Lecturer in Applied AI and the Course Director for Postgraduate Applied AI at the School of Information Technology, Deakin University. She earned her PhD in Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence) from Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia, where she received the Executive Dean’s Commendation for Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award (top 5%). Before joining Deakin, she worked as an AI scientist in the industry.
Dr. Nakisa's research focuses on Artificial Intelligence (AI), deep learning, human-machine interaction and teaming, computational cognition, and affective computing to address real-world challenges in healthcare, transportation, space, and defense. Her work on developing systems that understand human performance, mental workload, and emotional dynamics aims to enhance human-machine interactions and teaming, contributing to the human-alignment problem by ensuring AI systems are aligned with fundamental human needs and intentions.
A prolific speaker, Dr. Nakisa is frequently invited to present at prestigious industry conferences and public engagements, including a TEDx talk. She has published over 50 articles in top-tier AI and computer science journals. She has secured over $2.6 million in external research funding from Australian and US funding bodies, including the US Defense Agency, Microsoft, CSIRO, industry partners, the Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre (AMGC), Bendigo Bank, the Victorian Government, and Table Tennis Australia (TTA).
