BIO
Miles O’Neil is a theatre-maker, musician, actor, director and academic. He received his PhD from the University of Melbourne in 2018. He has also taught at the Victorian College of the Arts. As a founding member of the performance group and band the Suitcase Royale, Miles has been presented in the Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Darwin, and Dark Mofo arts festivals in Australia and internationally in multiple arts festivals in the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, USA, Canada and New Zealand. Outside of Suitcase Royale, Miles regularly works as a director of large-scale public art and theatre and as screen actor, voice-over artist and musician.
Miles researches the relationship between sound and performance and within that, he has several interests. Firstly, in the relationship between contemporary theatre and live music performance. Secondly, the sonic evocation of imagined landscapes includes both the live performance of sound and music and pre-recorded composition, Foley and sound design. Thirdly, in the architecture of sound and sonic technology in relation to traditional theatre spaces, unconventional spaces, and large-scale public spaces. Lastly, in the relationship between contemporary Australian performance and the Gothic, including the vital role sound and live music often plays in productions that have been critically received as works of contemporary Australian Gothic theatre.
