Dr Tze Chuan 'Chewie' Ang is a Senior Lecturer in the Finance Discipline Group at Deakin Business School. His entire academic studies at the University of Melbourne, spanning his Bachelor of Commerce (Hons.), Master of Commerce (Hons.), and PhD in Finance were fully funded by multiple scholarships. He is well trained in finance, economics, and econometrics and was awarded the top doctoral student of the year.

The core of Dr Ang’s research lies in analysing the cross-section of stock returns. Specialising in asset-pricing anomalies, equity-lending, and short-selling, Dr Ang also investigates short-term financing and Australian financial issues. His research has been published in the Review of Asset Pricing Studies and the Journal of Banking and Finance, amongst other premier journals. Widely cited within academia, his work also attracts media attention.

Dr Ang has reviewed over 50 papers for 17 mid- to top-tier finance journals, including Management Science and the Journal of Banking and Finance, focusing on short-selling, trade credit, cash holdings, and empirical asset pricing. He has been collaborating with leading scholars at top business schools worldwide, including Emory University (US), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), HKUST (Hong Kong), Erasmus University Rotterdam (the Netherlands), Hitotsubashi University (Japan), the University of Melbourne (Australia), and others. He also actively engages with industry practitioners through dialogues, symposiums, and networking events.

Whilst Dr Ang is a specialist in teaching large classes (over 600 students), Dr Ang’s broad teaching portfolio covers major undergraduate and postgraduate finance subjects, ranging from introductory finance to advanced investments. He constantly updates the curriculum to incorporate state-of-the-art knowledge in finance. He is known for adopting authentic, inclusive, and evidence-based learning activities and has received excellent feedback year after year. He is also dedicated to mentoring and supervising undergraduate and doctoral students who were successfully placed in universities and industries globally.

During his free time, Dr Ang enjoys managing family-investment portfolios, playing the piano, making artworks, reading about politics, economics, and history, amongst other hobbies.

Bibek Aryal is a Master of Research student in Finance at Deakin Business School. My academic and research interests center on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and sustainable business practices. He is particularly passionate about exploring the intersection of ESG with interdisciplinary fields and investigating the evolving landscape of alternative investments. He aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of how sustainability and responsible investment strategies can enhance corporate value and drive long-term impact in emerging and global markets.

Dr Sohel Azad is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Finance in Deakin Business School. Previously, Sohel held lecturer and assistant professor positions at various universities in Bangladesh and Japan. He was a Visiting Research Fellow at Kobe Gakuin University in Japan and the American University of Sharjah in UAE. He earned his PhD in Finance from Monash University in 2012. Prior to this, he did an MSc in Development Economics from Ritsumeikan APU with the highest CGPA among the graduating class and, a Bachelor and Masters in Business Administration in Finance with first classes from the University of Chittagong in Bangladesh.

Sohel has published in various finance and economics journals that include Journal of Financial Research, Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money; International Review of Finance, International Review of Financial Analysis, Emerging Markets Review, Economic Modelling and Applied Economics. He also obtained some domestic and international research grants. Sohel presented his research papers in various domestic and international seminars and conferences.

His research interests include Islamic finance and banking, modelling and decomposing volatility and correlations in financial markets; financial contagion and asset pricing.

In addition to Sohel's research performance, he has received the AAUT citation Award 2018 and Deakin University Vice-Chancellor Award for teaching in 2017.

Chunli Cheng is a Lecturer of Finance at Deakin Business School. Before joining Deakin, she was an Associate Professor at Sun Yat-sen University (China). She received her PhD in Economics from the Bonn Graduate School of Economics (BGSE) at the University of Boon (Germany).

Her research interests lie at the intersection of insurance and risk management, health economics, and behavioural economics. Her work examines optimal investment decisions of institutional and retail investors in pensions, life insurance, health, and financial assets, with particular attention paid to their risk and behavioural preferences. Her work has been published in European Journal of Operational Research, The North American Journal of Economics and Finance, Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, and The Journal of Risk and Insurance.

Professor Andy Chui obtained his PhD in Finance from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Before joining the Deakin Business School in August 2024, he had been a faculty member at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) for thirty-two years. He is the founding Director of the flagship programme, MSc in Business and Management, at PolyU Business School (PBS) and was honoured with the PBS Fellow award in 2022. He was a finalist for the 2022 Spängler/IQAM award for the Best Investments Paper in Review of Finance. He has been the principal investigator of three research projects funded by the Hong Kong SAR’s Research Grants Council.

Professor Chui is best known for being one of the pioneers in cultural finance. He introduced “Individualism” to the empirical asset pricing literature and is considered one of the top five impactful authors in cultural finance (Goodell et al. 2023). Most of his papers are highly cited, and he is ranked in the top four percent of economists worldwide on Euclidian citations by RePEc/IDEAS.

Dr Saikat Sovan Deb is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Finance in Deakin Business School. Saikat teaches units in investments and empirical research methods. His research interests include empirical asset pricing and market microstructure.

Saikat completed his PhD in Finance from Monash University in 2008, Graduate Certificate of Higher Education in Deakin Univerisity in 2009, Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management from Institute Management Technology India in 2001 and Bachelor of Science in 1999. Saikat has published his research in various international journals including, Journal of Banking of Finance, Pacific-Basin Finance Journal and Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money. He is also serving as the Director of Higher Degree by Research for Department of Finance  since 2016.

Dr Mong Shan Ee is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Finance at Deakin Business School. She completed her postgraduate education, earning a Master of Arts in Management Science and PhD in Engineering from the University of Tsukuba in Japan. She acquired the CFA charter in 2019. 

Mong Shan's research and teaching interests lie in the areas of corporate finance and alternative investments. At Deakin, Mong Shan teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate units related to corporate finance. She was awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in May 2024, recognising her commitment to excellence in teaching.

Dr Ning Gong is the Course Director of the Master of Finance and an Associate Professor of Finance at Deakin Business School. He earned his PhD in Finance from Washington University in St. Louis. Prior to joining Deakin, he held academic positions at the University of Melbourne and the University of New South Wales, and served as a visiting faculty member at the University of California, Davis.

Dr Gong teaches across postgraduate and research programs, including Financial Institutions and Investment Banking in the Master of Finance, and Advanced Finance for Master by Research and PhD students. He received the Teaching Excellence Award from Melbourne Business School in 2007.

His research focuses broadly on corporate finance. He has received multiple accolades, including the Best Research Paper Award from the Australian Journal of Management (2001, 2004) and the International Review of Finance (2013). His work has been published in leading journals such as the Review of Finance, Journal of Financial Intermediation, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Journal of Business Accounting and Finance, and Production and Operations Management, among others.

Dr Abdul Aziz Hayat Muhammad is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics in Deakin Business School. Aziz Hayat's research interests are in applied works in economics and finance. He has published in A* journals such as International Economic Review and the Journal of Banking and Finance among others. Apart from University level grants, Aziz Hayat has been the part of the team that has attracted funds from external bodies such as the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (AFANZ) in 2018, and Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI) from 2016 to 2018 for 50,000,000 yen. He was granted from 2013 to 2014 the International Research Fellowship by Deakin University. In 2017, Aziz Hayat received an invitation to visit the Asian Growth Research Institute in Japan. He was also selected for the President's Programme for Care of Highly Qualified Overseas Pakistanis (PPQP) in 2013, which is a highly reputable and competitive award to succeed.

Aziz Hayat has got teaching appreciation letters for achieving exceptionally high teaching evaluation scores. His teaching interests' areas are international finance, quantitative finance, financial modelling, and financial econometrics. He has been on various roles for his services including seminar coordinator and remained the part of service committees such as credit for prior learning and central general misconduct committee membership and supervision to PhD students.

Aziz Hayat completed his Master of Social Sciences from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2001 and PhD from Monash University in 2007. During his PhD studies, he succeeded in gaining a highly competitive internship position to work on a project in the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in 2004. The project was later published in an A* finance journal."

Qiyang is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Finance at Deakin Business School. His research lies in a broad area of empirical corporate finance, with a focus on innovation, climate change, labor market, machine learning, and textual analysis. His work has been published in top-tier journals including The Review of Financial Studies, Management Science, and The Journal of Corporate Finance, and presented at prestigious conferences such as AFA, EFA, FIRS, CICF, SFS Cavalcade Asia-Pacific, and UNPRI. He also serves as an ad hoc referee for several leading journals rated A* by the ABDC.

My research focuses on corporate finance, financial institutions and markets, and behavioural finance. In particular, I consider models of financial distress and bankruptcy. In corporate finance, I analyse the optimal risk-taking of distressed firms and the information outsiders can infer from it. Previously, I worked on the optimal use of derivatives to mitigate transaction risks in mergers and acquisitions. Regarding the risk management of financial institutions, my current focus is on the liquidity and bankruptcy risk of insurance companies that arise from the behavioural decision making of retail customers. Furthermore, I worked on behavioural explanations of why people use technical analysis despite its lack of profitability.

Dr Ameeta Jain is an Associate Professor in Property & Real Estate in the Department of Finance at the Deakin Business School. She has more than 15 years of teaching experience in Economics, Property and Finance units and has led unit teams in the development and enhancement of various units. Ameeta is passionate about teaching and has been rewarded consistently for her teaching excellence. She served as the director of undergraduate property programs at Deakin between 2016-2023, where she was responsible for managing industry accreditation for property courses. 

From 2025 onwards, Ameeta is serving as the Faculty of Business and Law lead in Deakin’s HOME research group. Ameeta is the Co-Director of Principles of Responsible Management (PRME) at Deakin Business School. In this role she has been successfully delivering Carbon Literacy Training for staff at Australian and international universities since 2022.

Ameeta's primary research interests are in resilience and sustainability with particular emphasis on the approaches by business and associated stakeholders to advance sustainable organisations and cities. Ameeta's research is most often multi-disciplinary and directed towards examining issues of resilience and sustainability within the property and financial markets. She has had many successful government and industry grants on the application of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in national and regional settings. Her research has high impact as evidenced by the utilisation of the findings by National and local governments as well as property industry.

Ameeta has produced several reports focussing on Sustainable cities (Sustainable Development Goal 11) which have been highly regarded by industry and government stakeholders. She has published in highly ranked international peer-reviewed journals. Ameeta is regularly invited by media on various occasions to discuss her research on trends in property market. From 2022 onwards Ameeta has delivered successfully on local council funded projects on affordable and climate ready housing. As a part of these projects, she has actively engaged with the community on how to make homes more energy efficient and climate ready. 

Her research contributes to the DBS themes "Business and Society" and to Deakin 2030 Ideas to Impact strategy through the themes of Building Safe and Secure Communities and Enabling a Sustainable World as well as the multidisciplinary vision of the HOME research hub.
