Deakin Distinguished Professor Emeritus AM
Brenda is currently Deakin Distinguished Profressor Emeritus AM at Deakin University and
from 2011-2018 was Vice President and Executive Dean, Faculty of Arts and
Education at Deakin. She was awarded a Order of Australia (AM) for her work in Tertiary Education and with Indigenous Communities and Education. Brenda's work is focussed on improving educational outcomes with young people and their communities. She works with TEQSA and the
ARC ERA processes as well as Peter MacCallum Foundation research committee, She is also working with medical colleagues on a number of research projects at Peter MacCallum Comprehensive Cancer Centre. She is currently Co-Chair of the Patient Portal Advisory Group which is building improved digital communication and information with patients, carers and clinical personal across 4 major hospitals.
Brenda has recently been Chair of the Australian Fulbright Commission
Victorian Selection Committee (2012-2021), a Director of the Origin Foundation Board (2013-2020) a
Director of Girls from Oz, and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of
Company Directors, and a member of several international peer review journal
editorial committees. She was Chair of the ERA 2015 and 2018 Review
Evaluation Committee for Education and Human Society, President of the
Australian Council of Deans of Education 2011-2014 and a Fulbright Senior
Scholar (2008).
Her previous roles include the Executive Dean Education and Arts and
University Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Engagement, Equity and Indigenous at Edith
Cowan University (2007-2011) where she was concurrently Associate Dean,
International (2010) and Acting Head, Kurongkurl Katitjin (2008). Prior to
working in Western Australia, Brenda was Director Access and Success, Victoria
University (2006-2007), and Head, School of Education, Victoria University
(2003-2006).
With a background in the social sciences, early childhood, school and
community and teacher education Brenda's research has focused on educational
equity and community-university partnerships for improved educational
opportunity and socially just outcomes. She is widely published and has lead
research and development partnerships with communities, schools and government
in Australian and international partners, often with Indigenous Australian
leaders and communities to enhance educational and social experiences for
young people.
