BIO

Dr Russell Kennedy (PhD) is Associate Head of School, International and Partnerships, in Deakin University’s School of Communication and Creative Arts. An award-winning scholar, communication designer, filmmaker, educator and researcher, he has more than 30 years of professional experience and over two decades of experience in design education, research and academic leadership.

Kennedy’s collaborative, practice-led research connects universities, industry, government, cultural institutions and communities to address complex social, cultural and technological challenges. His research spans communication design, design thinking, conversational artificial intelligence, Indigenous knowledge systems, digital storytelling, national identity and interdisciplinary innovation. His current work examines conversational AI as a performative, educational and narrative medium, with particular attention to authenticity, accuracy, truth, trust and human interaction.

Research Impact: Indigenous Representation in Design Practice

Kennedy completed his PhD at Swinburne University of Technology in 2015. His thesis, Designing with Indigenous Knowledge: Protocols for Respectful and Authentic Cross-cultural Representation in Communication Design Practice, contributed directly to the development of the award-winning Australian Indigenous Design Charter and International Indigenous Design Charter, co-authored with Dr Meghan Kelly, Professor Brian Martin and Dr Jefa Greenaway.

Conceived as a problem-solving research initiative, this work responds directly to challenges identified by designers seeking best-practice guidance when representing Indigenous cultures and knowledge. The Charters provide principles and protocols for respectful, authentic and Indigenous-led engagement in professional design practice. This high impact research has influenced government policy, procurement, higher and secondary education, and professional practice in Australia and internationally.

The Indigenous Design Charter research platform has received support from Indigenous Architecture and Design Australia, the Design Institute of Australia, the International Council of Design, Deakin University’s School of Communication and Creative Arts, and the National Indigenous Knowledges Education Research Innovation Institute, formerly the Institute of Koorie Education.

In 2016, Kennedy co-led the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade-funded program Was Is Always! On Route to an International Indigenous Design Charter. The program involved participatory research workshops in Greenland, Sweden and Denmark and informed the development of the international Charter, which was launched at the 2017 World Design Summit in Montreal, Canada.

The Australian and International Indigenous Design Charters have subsequently been embedded within design curricula at Deakin University, Monash University and the University of Melbourne. Their principles have also been incorporated into the revised Victorian Certificate of Education Visual Communication Design curriculum. The research platform has generated journal articles, conference papers, Non-Traditional Research Outputs and continuing national and international engagement.

In 2021, Deakin University, in partnership with Monash University and OCAD University in Toronto, secured an Australian Research Council Discovery Indigenous grant. Kennedy and Kelly joined fellow Charter co-authors Professor Brian Martin and Dr Jefa Greenaway to evaluate the implementation and impact of the Australian and International Indigenous Design Charters and contribute to the development of an Indigenous Design Charter appropriate to the Canadian context.

International Design Leadership

Kennedy served on the Board of the International Council of Design from 2003 to 2013, including as President from 2009 to 2011. He remains actively involved in the organisation and currently chairs its Committee of Former Presidents.

During his international leadership, Kennedy founded INDIGO, the International Indigenous Design Network, establishing a global platform to connect Indigenous designers and examine relationships between Indigenous cultures and contemporary design practice.

As President of ICoD, he initiated Iridescent: The International Council of Design Journal of Design Research, an international peer-reviewed journal supporting scholarship in design education, theory, research and practice. Iridescentsubsequently evolved into Communication Design: Interdisciplinary and Graphic Design Research, published by Taylor & Francis.

Kennedy was also project leader of the World Design Survey™, an international industry data/profile gathering research initiative developed in partnership with the Seoul Metropolitan Government. The project established a framework for examining the contribution of design to national economies and the extent to which governments employ design as a social, economic, cultural and developmental enabler. During this period as ICoD President (2009 to 2011) he also served as an international advisor to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network on UNESCO City of Design designations.

DesignMind and UNESCO Creative Cities

In 2018, Kennedy was appointed Co-Director of DesignMind by former Deakin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander. DesignMind is Deakin University’s interdisciplinary design and innovation platform, connecting design-related research across the University and supporting engagement with industry, government and the City of Greater Geelong’s UNESCO City of Design objectives. Kennedy initiated and contributed to Geelong’s successful 2017 designation as a UNESCO City of Design. In 2018, he also consulted to the City of Greater Bendigo during the development of its successful application to become a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.

Acadmic and Professioanl Experience

Before joining Deakin University in 2014, Kennedy was a Research Fellow at Swinburne University of Technology. He previously held academic and leadership positions at Monash University between 1994 and 2010.

Before commencing his academic career, Kennedy was Principal of Russell Kennedy Design Pty Ltd and co-owner of the motion-picture and documentary production company Onset Productions Pty Ltd. His design clients included Shell Australia, Honda Australia, General Motors Holden and the Australian Football League, for which he contributed to the inaugural AFL brand development in 1990.

His film credits include creator, co-producer and second-unit director of Rose Against the Odds, an internationally distributed television miniseries about Aboriginal world champion boxer Lionel Rose; Lofty Ambitions, documenting the career of Luc Longley, Australia’s first National Basketball Association player; and The Story of a Game, the official centenary history of basketball, produced for the International Basketball Federation and screened internationally through ESPN.

Fellowships and Recognition

Kennedy is a Life Member of the International Council of Design and a Fellow of the Design Institute of Australia, the Royal Society for Arts, Manufactures and Commerce and the Deakin Motion Lab. As detailed below, his academic, research and professional contributions have been recognised through multiple competitive and peer-reviewed awards.

In 2008, Kennedy was appointed a Club Melbourne Ambassador by the Premier of Victoria, the Hon. John Brumby MP, in recognition of his contribution to promoting Victoria’s design capabilities internationally and positioning Melbourne as a leading global destination for design, conventions and major events.

Kennedy continues to draw upon his academic, professional and international design advocacy networks to advance Deakin University’s global engagement, interdisciplinary research partnerships and international collaborations.
