BIO

I am Professor of Philosophy at Deakin, and Director of the Bachelor of PPE degree. Outside of Deakin, I am a Member of the Australian Research Council College of Experts, and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (FAHA), where I am also Deputy Head of the Philosophy section of the academy. My research has been supported by Australian Research Council grants (Lead CI on two Discovery Projects) and now an NHMRC Ideas grant (2025-27) on the "Neural and Experiential Bases of Tourette's Syndrome". I have written six books, including Analytic versus Continental: Arguments on the Methods and Value of Philosophy (2010, with James Chase), Phenomenology, Naturalism, and Science: A Hybrid and Heretical Proposal (2018), and, most recently, Merleau-Ponty, Embodied Cognition and Enactivism: Between Phenomenology and the Life Sciences (EUP, 2026). Some of my work has examined and helped to ‘bridge’ the so-called divide between analytic and continental philosophy. My recent work has become more interdisciplinary in nature, while continuing to address philosophical and empirical issues concerning embodiment, temporality, and social cognition, including their variability.
