Professor in Cognition and Performance Assessment

Faculty of Science Engineering and Built Environment/Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation

BIO

Professor Asim Bhatti is a researcher, inventor and innovation leader whose work focuses on advancing human capability through neuroscience, artificial intelligence and translational technology.

He pioneered and leads the Neural and Cognitive Systems research program at Deakin University, bringing together neuroengineering, intelligent systems, physiology and artificial intelligence to better understand how cognitive, behavioural and biological processes influence human performance, wellbeing and decision-making. His research spans multiple levels of analysis, from cellular investigations using brain-on-a-chip technologies through to human, organisational and human–AI systems operating in complex real-world environments.

A major focus of Professor Bhatti's research is the understanding, measurement and enhancement of human capability. His work investigates the neural mechanisms underpinning cognition and behaviour, while developing technologies that enable objective assessment of human performance, cognitive readiness, team effectiveness and human–machine interaction. This includes research into human–human, human–machine and human–AI teaming, examining how individuals and teams perform, adapt and make decisions in operational settings. These activities have led to extensive collaborations with government, defence, healthcare, emergency-services and industry partners.

Professor Bhatti is the inventor and co-inventor of multiple technologies spanning human-performance assessment, simulation, intelligent systems and neurotechnology. These innovations have been applied across domains including healthcare, public health, defence, emergency services, advanced manufacturing and transportation, and have contributed to several successful commercial ventures operating internationally. His work is characterised by a strong commitment to translating research into practical outcomes, creating technologies and capabilities that improve human performance, safety, wellbeing and organisational effectiveness.

In addition to his research leadership, Professor Bhatti leads major multidisciplinary initiatives spanning neuroengineering, public health, defence innovation, advanced manufacturing and human-AI systems. Through these activities, he continues to build research, industry and government partnerships that strengthen Australia's scientific, technological and human capability.
