BIO

Dr Angel A. J. Torriero is a Senior Lecturer in Chemistry at Deakin University whose work integrates mechanistic electrochemistry, analytical sensing, translational diagnostics and contemporary chemistry education. His research explores electrochemical interfaces and applies fundamental principles to the design of portable, reliable and user-calibration-free sensing platforms for real-world applications.

Dr Torriero leads externally funded and industry-supported research programs focused on translating electrochemical science into practical analytical technologies. His current work addresses challenges in livestock health diagnostics, biosensing and applied measurement systems, with emphasis on analytical robustness, field deployment, usability and pathways toward adoption. His research has generated protected and patent-pending intellectual property and is progressing through validation, technology development and commercial translation pathways.

His scholarship spans electrode processes, redox mediators, ferrocene chemistry, biosensor design, co-facing electrode systems and user-calibration-free electrochemical measurement. He has also authored critical and framework-setting reviews that strengthen evidentiary standards, mechanistic interpretation, sensor design and reporting practice in electrochemical research. Through international editorial appointments and special issue leadership, he contributes to research quality, scholarly standards and emerging directions in the international chemistry community.

In teaching, Dr Torriero has led sustained curriculum and assessment reform in chemistry. His innovations include flipped and cloud-based self-directed learning, competency-based laboratory assessment, direct evaluation of practical skills, and structured integration of generative AI into scientific education. His teaching emphasises practical capability, scientific reasoning, critical evaluation and professional readiness. This work has received School recognition for teaching innovation and was acknowledged in the 2025 RACI accreditation review of Deakin’s Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Forensic Science chemistry programs.

Dr Torriero also supervises and mentors undergraduate researchers, higher degree research candidates and early-career researchers across electrochemistry, biosensing and translational diagnostics. His integrated teaching and research profile connects rigorous electrochemical science, contemporary laboratory education, researcher development and translation to industry and community benefit.
