BIO

Professor Peter Vuillermin is a general paediatrician with an interest in the early-life origins of health and disease in the modern environment. Peter is the Clinical Director of Research at Barwon Health, and leads various initiatives to integrate research into routine clinical care. He is co-lead investigator on the Barwon Infant Study (https://barwoninfantstudy.org.au), which is a population-derived Australian birth cohort study (n=1074) incorporating longitudinal assembly of uniquely detailed array of biological samples in combination with environmental and clinical data. Peter has a particular interest in the relationship between the modern environment and diet, the microbiome and its metabolites, and the early life origins of immune dysregulation, allergic disease, asthma, and autism with high support needs. Peter was the foundation Co-Chair of the Children's Inpatient Research Collaboration of Australia and New Zealand (CIRCAN), which aims to improve the treatment of children in hospital via robust collaborative research. He co-leads ARROW (https://circan.org/om-85), the largest clinical trial among children with preschool wheeze/asthma (n=1088), testing whether an orally administered bacterial lysate can prevent wheeze-related hospital admissions. Peter co-leads the MRFF-funded Farm PRT-E clinical trial (target n=1100), in partnership with the Farm My School initiative, testing a novel dietary intervention in pregnancy that targets microbiome pathways to improve maternal and infant brain health. Peter has played a leading role in establishing the Barwon Health and Deakin University Clinician Scientist Pathway, the Adrian Costa Clinical Trials Centre, and the Barwon Health and Deakin University Clinical Trials Alliance. Peter leads one of 10 teams, selected internationally, to deliver the $50M USD Wellcome LEAP Foundations Of a Resilient Microbiome (FORM) program.
