TEACHING EXPERTISE
Since 2001 at Deakin, I have developed many units and taught across initial teacher education (ITE) programs. Drawing on pre- and post-democracy experience in South Africa I enhance intercultural perspectives, enriching music education within ITE programs. Whilst classically trained (pianist and pipe organist), I value inclusion and cultural diversity, challenging the canon of Western European music. I seek to motivate students to engage through my energy, enthusiasm, passion and commitment to music education (on-campus and online). My teaching approaches are enriched through innovative practices by making strong links between teaching and research activities (locally and internationally with schools, teachers, and music organisations).
I draw on a range of pedagogies and instructional strategies in a safe and stimulating environment that allows students to be both teachers and learners. Accepting that we all learn from each other I encourage our shared professional growth by:
• instilling confidence, competence, respect, tolerance and cultural sensitivity to teaching and learning
• fostering an appreciation of the highly beneficial role music plays in school settings, communities and society
• assisting students who lack confidence, competence, and belief in their ability to include music in the classroom
• developing graduates who are able to transmit the spirit and content of music through their professional practice.
Since joining Deakin I have kept abreast of current knowledge and developments in my discipline and the teaching profession, establishing and developing strong professional networks with a wide spectrum of educators from leading music organisations. Through this interaction and engagement students are given the opportunity to participate in professional learning (online or face-to-face) to further develop their music skills, knowledge and understanding, and become part of a community of practice. Similarly, I undertake professional learning and research to deliver relevant and contemporary music units.
Another aspect of my teaching involves supervision of postgraduate research students. I have supervised MEds (music research paper) and PhDs (music education focus). As an experienced HDR colloquium panellist, examiner and co-supervisor, I believe I have the skills, academic rigour and sensitivity to offer guidance and critique while creating a supportive, accessible, collaborative environment that fosters open communication. As a supervisor it is my role to mentor through all stages of candidature, provide advice about research opportunities, career advancement and professional organisations.
