BIO

I am a Professor and Head of AI, Optimisation, and Materials Discovery at Deakin University's Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute. My research spans machine learning areas such as AI safety and assurance, deep learning, optimisation and reinforcement learning with top-tier, award-winning publications. I apply my research to tackle real-world challenges in healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and computer vision. Internationally recognised in sample-efficient AI, I am ranked highly in Australia and globally in Bayesian optimisation. I have secured over $30 million in competitive funding from ARC, NHMRC, Wellcome Trust, Defence, and industry, which supported my research leading to novel ML models, improved alloys and materials, improved manufacturing processes, and efficient clinical trial designs. I have supervised 16 PhDs, with Best Paper/Thesis Awards. I mentored 15 postdocs who secured positions at Oxford Uni, John Hopkins Uni, RMIT, Google, and Amazon. I am an associate editor of Journal Springer Nature Computer Science, and regularly serve on senior technical committees of top-tier AI/ML conferences.
