DrClaire Charles

Claire is a member of the Editorial Board of Gender and Education, a leading international journal in the field of sociology of gender and education.

In an article which appeared in The Conversation in May 2024, myself and colleague Lucinda McKnight comment on the research and debates about the merits of single gender schooling

Claire has been actively involved in the Australian Association for Research in Education for her whole career, presenting papers and organising symposia at 12 annual conferences since 2004.

Claire was on the organising committee for the 2014 interim conference of the Gender and Education Association conference, held in Melbourne, Australia.

I led a program of seminars to support Faculty colleagues with student centered approaches to teaching and learning as part of a Faculty strategic initiative to support colleagues new or returning to teaching

Lead initiatives to build research culture and support colleagues and graduate students. Member of REDI executive committee.

In April 2024 Claire was an invited visiting scholar at Colby College, a small liberal arts college in the USA. She contributed to teaching and gave a public lecture on gender justice and elite boys' private schooling.

In 2016 Claire joined Deakin's new Strategic Research and Innovation Centre - Research for Educational Impact (REDI). In 2022 she became co-leader of its 'Diversity and Social Justice in Education' theme.

In 2015 Claire was promoted to Level C, Senior Lecturer, in her continuing academic position at Deakin.

In 2014 my sole authored monograph was published by Routledge, arising from my doctoral work on elite girls' schooling and empowerment.

Led strategic partnership between Deakin and the IB to support IB education in the growing number of IB world schools in the Melbourne and Geelong regions.
