DrStephanie Merkouris

I am a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology at Deakin University and am a member of the Centre for Drug use, Addictive and Antisocial Behaviour research, the CONNECT collaborative research centre and the Centre for Social and Early Emotional Development (SEED).

My expertise is in gambling and other behavioural addictions. My research covers the identification, prevention and treatment of gambling in people who are experiencing gambling harm due to their own or someone else's gambling behaviour but I am particularly interested in how advances in technology can be used for assessment, intervention and dissemination purposes, as exemplified by my extensive work in the development and evaluation of ehealth and mhealth interventions for people who gamble and their affected others. I also have extensive expertise in: (1) the conduct of systematic reviews and meta-analyses; (2) the use of innovative methodologies (e.g., ecological momentary assessment studies, natural language processing); (3) the use of advanced statistic analyses; and (4) the use of co-design principles.

I completed my PhD at Monash University in 2017, in which I examined predictors of treatment outcomes in a randomised controlled trial of psychological interventions for gambling. I have published 58 scientific articles and have received funding worth over $5.76m and am currently the recipient of a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship from the New South Wales Office of Responsible Gambling.
