Associate ProfessorBernice Redley

Bernice Redley is Associate Professor in the Centre for Nursing Research,
Deakin University and Monash Health Partnership. She shares her time between
Monash Health (all campuses) and at the Burwood campus of Deakin University.
Dr Redley is a member of the School of Nursing and Midwifery and the Quality
and Patient Safety (QPS) Strategic Research Center (SRC) in the Faculty of
Health at Deakin University. Dr Redley also supervises a number of research
students (PhD, Masters and Honours), teaches in the Master of Nursing
practice/ Nurse Practitioner, postgraduate specialty programs and is Course
Director for Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) program at Deakin University. She
has a unique combination of knowledge, skills and experience in clinical care,
health service delivery, academic and Government settings. She has many well
established collaborations with local and international experts through her
research examining patient safety and quality in health care delivery. Dr
Redley's previous roles include Senior/ Research Fellow in Deakin University's
partnership with Epworth Healthcare (2004-2015), University academic roles,
clinical education (emergency department) (1997-2005), Senior Project Officer
in the Department of Health (Victoria)(2005-2011) for emergency and acute
health service policy and projects; and consulting across a range of
multidisciplinary, clinical and non-clinical settings. She has excellent
knowledge of emergency clinical care, models of care in acute hospitals,
health system performance and service redesign and improvement. Dr Redley's
experience and expertise has seen her invited to advise and consult on topics
such as acute medical inpatient care and services, acute hospital and
emergency department flows, effective discharge strategies and caring for the
older person care in acute hospitals. She sits on the Clinical Leadership
Group on Care of Older People in Hospital at the Department of Health and
Human Services, Victoria and is an expert adviser on the Joanna Briggs expert
reference group on trauma and emergency care. Her advisory roles contribute to
policy and practice to support safer and more effective inpatient care
delivery within the acute health sector. Dr Redley's current research position
with Monash Health (since 2015) has had a specific focus on patient safety and
quality; her research encompasses aspects of psycho-social as well as physical
care of the patient in acute hospitals. Specific research interests include
preventing harm during hospitalisation, inter-professional clinical
communication during handover and ward rounds; models of care to enhance
performance of front line health care teams; and patient and family
participation in care delivery. Her strong focus on patient outcomes to
improve quality and safety continues to drive her passion for research and
improvement in patient care delivery to improve the patient and clinician
experiences of hospital care.
