BIO

Claire Crossfield is a Lecturer in Nursing in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Deakin University. She has a clinical background in intensive care nursing, and that experience shapes both her teaching and her research on patient safety, clinical deterioration and the role of patients and families in care.

Claire is a PhD candidate at Deakin University. Her doctoral research looks at patient- and family-activated escalation systems, which facilitated patients and their families raise concerns about clinical deterioration and ask for a timely clinical review. Her work explores how these systems are understood, used and supported in practice, and how they can strengthen partnerships between patients, families and healthcare teams.

Claire’s research spans critical care nursing and nursing education. Her published work covers intensive care nursing practice, including enteral nutrition and neurological assessment, family-centred communication through telehealth, and how shift scheduling affects the wellbeing of critical care nurses. Her scholarship of teaching and learning focuses on designing and evaluating interactive clinical decision-making scenarios that prepare nursing students for complex clinical practice.
