BIO

Associate Professor Lemai Nguyen is an Information Systems scholar whose research focuses on human-centred and responsible artificial intelligence, human–AI collaboration, digital health, and the design, implementation and evaluation of AI-enabled socio-technical systems. Her work examines how human agency, trust, relationality, capability and organisational context shape the adoption, use and impact of digital and AI technologies.

 

Her research spans healthcare, higher education, government and industry, with expertise in digital health maturity, AI adoption, machine learning, socio-technical systems, design science research and digital innovation. She leads collaborative research programmes including the Victorian Digital Health Maturity Model, the AI Adoption Maturity Model, and a national initiative examining Generative AI policy across Australian and New Zealand universities.

 

Lemai publishes in leading Information Systems, digital health and technology journals and conferences, including the European Journal of Information Systems, International Journal of Medical Informatics, Communications of the Association for Information Systems, Information Technology & People, ECIS, PACIS, ACIS and HICSS. Her research also contributes to emerging scholarship on responsible AI, creativity, problem-solving, emotional and relational aspects of technology use, and sustainability-oriented digital transformation.

 

Across her research, education and engagement, Lemai seeks to build collaborative ecosystems that strengthen human capability while creating enduring value for students, organisations and society.

 

Her academic leadership focuses on developing research capability and strengthening scholarly communities. She founded the AAIS Digital Health Virtual Community and established the AAIS Reviewer Development Workshop, an ongoing initiative supporting reviewer capability and early career researchers across the Australasian Information Systems community. She is a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Digital Health, a Senior Certified Professional of the Australian Computer Society, and a member of the Association for Information Systems.

 

Lemai currently serves as Secretary of the Australasian Council of Professors and Heads of Information Systems (ACPHIS). She contributes to the discipline through editorial leadership, conference leadership, HDR examination, reviewer development, and peer review for leading journals, conferences, research councils and national funding bodies. Her editorial appointments include Guest Associate Editor for the European Journal of Information Systems Special Issue The Future of Creating and Distributing Value in Digital Health Ecosystems, together with Guest Editor roles for special issues on artificial intelligence, machine learning and digital health. She also serves in conference leadership roles, including Track Chair and Conference Associate Editor for leading international Information Systems conferences.

 

In education, Lemai designs industry-engaged, research-informed and responsible AI-enabled learning experiences for diverse business students. She has led curriculum development and renewal across Digital Business Analysis, Artificial Intelligence in Business, Machine Learning in Business and Introduction to Machine Learning in Business. Her teaching integrates authentic assessment, sustainability, responsible GenAI use, international collaboration and partnerships with industry, government and alumni. She has also contributed to the development and international dissemination of PRME educational resources showcasing innovative responsible management education practices.

 

Her work has been recognised through awards for research, teaching, leadership and service, including Deakin University’s Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence (2023), the Faculty of Business and Law Teaching and Learning Award (2022), the Faculty of Business and Law Research and Innovation Award (2024), and the AAIS Community Champion Award (2025).
