Dr Burhan Khan is a Research Fellow in Modelling, Simulation and Optimisation at the Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation, Deakin University. His research develops intelligent decision support systems by integrating optimisation, predictive simulation, digital twins and artificial intelligence to address complex operational challenges. He specialises in translating advanced computational methods into scalable frameworks that improve planning, resource allocation and decision making across government and industry. His work spans electoral management, defence, healthcare, transport, advanced manufacturing and critical infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and real world impact.
Dr Khan leads industry and government aligned research initiatives, serving as a Chief Investigator on projects exceeding $6 million in total research value with partners including the Australian Electoral Commission, NSW Electoral Commission, Defence agencies, and major mining, manufacturing and technology organisations. His research has developed optimisation, simulation and AI based frameworks that support large scale resource planning, logistics, scheduling and operational improvement across complex systems. He currently leads the optimisation component of a REACH funded initiative and contributes machine learning and decision support expertise to an MRFF funded health project in collaboration with the Faculty of Health. He also serves as Graduate Research Coordinator, providing leadership in HDR governance, candidate development and institute wide research training initiatives.
Dr Khan holds a PhD in Engineering from Deakin University and has established an internationally recognised research profile in intelligent decision support, optimisation, predictive simulation and artificial intelligence. His research integrates evolutionary computation, agent based and discrete event simulation, machine learning, computer vision and uncertainty aware modelling to develop innovative approaches for complex systems. He has published extensively in international peer reviewed venues and his work has supported research collaborations, industry partnerships and academic engagement across Australia and internationally. He contributes to the global research community through peer review activities for international journals and conferences.
Prior to his current appointment, Dr Khan was an Associate Research Fellow at Deakin University, where he developed optimisation, scheduling and simulation methodologies for industry and government funded projects. These experiences established the foundation for his current research program, which focuses on advancing computational methods and translating them into impactful solutions for complex operational systems.
