BIO
Dr Amanuel Elias is a senior research fellow within the UNESCO Chair Cultural Diversity and Social Justice at the Alfred Deakin Institute (Deakin University). He carries out interdisciplinary research on race relations, ethnic inequalities and the social, economic and health impacts of racism. Dr Elias has completed several projects requiring advanced quantitative skill, analysing national and international data using different statistical techniques.
Dr Elias’ has a strong track record of high-quality research outputs that includes 26 peer-reviewed publications in total. This comprises 2 monographs (1 sole authored, 1 lead authored) with high-quality academic publishers (Palgrave MacMillan; Emerald). It includes 22 journal articles all in high-quality and impactful global journals [18 SRJ Q1], 1 book chapter and 1 book review. He has 4437 citations, h-index= 16, and i-10 index=20 (Google Scholar, 18 June 2025) which is very high for my career stage and field. These high impact outputs have established his reputation as a leading national scholar in racial and ethnic studies and intercultural relations.
Dr Elias' work focuses on racism and anti-racism, and has innovatively examined the economic impact of racial discrimination and diversity. His latest research produced a systematic review on intercultural dialogue, and developed the Intercultural Dialogue Index (ICDI) an international index measuring intercultural relations across 51 countries. Dr Elias previously estimated the economic cost of racial discrimination in Australia. He is currently conducting projects on the relationship between racism and trust, anti-racism in Australia, intercultural relations, and ethnic inequalities.
