BIO

Dr Yolanda Esteban is a passionate educator working in space of Teaching and Learning leadership in the School of Architecture and Built Environment. As Associate Head of School Teaching and Learning for the School, Yolanda strives to bring innovative practices to the fore, supporting built environment staff in their teaching and learning practice.

Yolanda has developed a successful career as Senior Lecturer in Architecture, delivering an extensive teaching expertise across design disciplines both in architecture and urban design, engaging actively with local government and immersing her students in real-world projects. With industry experience in the areas of urban design and strategic planning and formal training in Architecture and Construction Management, Yolanda has worked on several key visioning projects across Victoria in both regional and metropolitan contexts. She also served as an urban design advisor for the City of Port Phillip between 2004 and 2007, and the City of Greater Geelong in 2014.

A rich history of collaborative partnerships with the City of Greater Geelong since 2001 have brought excellent outcomes for Deakin University, including a number of key design and development ideas workshops, partnerships into our teaching programs, and strategic growth panels (Western Wedge Workshops 2001, 2006, VISION2 2012), Urban Heart Surgery Design Research Forum (2010-2012, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2023-2024), UNESCO City of Design Designation Launch (2017), Geelong Design Week Curatorial Panel (2020-2024).

Yolanda's research has focused on the changing profile of urban places, with specific expertise on the development of built form scenarios based on demographic modelling, and the nexus between vision-making and policy implementation. In more recent years, Yolanda has developed links between her teaching and research, beginning to build a portfolio of non-traditional research outputs.
