Based on this research project, Muttakin co-authored a research paper published in the ABDC A-ranked journal. He has also received several research grants, including an early-career grant from the Faculty of Business and Law at Deakin University and the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia (ICAA).

Muttakin is currently supervising one PhD student as principal supervisor and has successfully supervised two PhD students as associate supervisor and one Honours student as principal supervisor. Three research papers from these PhD and Honours projects were published in ABDC A-ranked journals. He has also examined eleven PhD theses and five Honours or Master’s theses in Australia and New Zealand.

Muttakin served as Director of the Chartered Accountancy Foundation (CAF) program at Deakin University from 2019 to 2022, providing academic leadership and strategic oversight following his earlier role as Deputy Director from 2017 to 2018. A key highlight of his directorship was his successful contribution to the development and implementation of the CloudFirst project in 2022. Muttakin has chaired and taught financial accounting units across both undergraduate and postgraduate programs and has led the development of OneDeakin—an advanced financial accounting unit in the Master of Professional Accounting (MPA) program.  He also played a significant role in developing an earlier CloudFirst project in 2020 for the Advanced Financial Accounting and Reporting unit within the CAANZ program at Deakin University. In recognition of his outstanding teaching performance, Muttakin has received multiple Teaching Excellence Awards and commendations from the Head of the Department of Accounting.

Muttakin has contributed extensively to teaching-related service within the Faculty of Business and Law, including roles as an Assessor for Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), a member of the Academic Integrity Committee, and a member of the Academic Progress Committee.
