BIO

Program Director, Sport Management

Editor-in-Chief, Sport Management Review

The objective of my research is to build the capacity of sport organisations thereby enhancing the quality of life for those who work for and participate in those organisations. Given its reliance on volunteers, the business and management of sport is unique, as are my domains of expertise: volunteer management and sport development, inclusive of women in sport. My research draws from a range of theoretical lenses.  Although grounded in management and organisational theory, my work also draws more broadly from psychology, sociology, and leisure frameworks and perspectives.

My scholarship focuses particularly on volunteer management, sport development and women in sport, contributing both theoretical advancements and applied insights relevant to sport organisations, policy, and practice—both on and off the field. My publication record includes:

  • 30 refereed journal articles, predominantly in A and A* ranked journals in sport management and the broader fields of recreation and leisure;
  • 48 book chapters, reflecting extensive academic collaboration and thought leadership;
  • 8 books as co-editor;
  • 17 commissioned industry reports; and
  • Numerous presentations at national and international academic and industry conferences.

Together, this body of work reflects my intellectual leadership, my ability to shape discourse in sport management, and my ongoing commitment to research that has both academic impact and practical relevance to the sport sector.

Over the course of my career, I have also secured over $680,000 Category 2–4 income. As Chief Investigator on these projects, I have taken full responsibility for leadership of:

  • Building and maintaining strong partnerships with industry stakeholders;
  • Assembling and leading cross-disciplinary research teams;
  • Designing and managing complex research projects; and
  • Ensuring high-quality, timely delivery of research outcomes tailored to partner needs.

I have led several significant projects that have been interdisciplinary in nature and shaped policy, management, and the ultimate success of sport organistions.
