DrElizabeth Holmes-Truscott

Elizabeth’s mixed-method and applied research program focuses on the behavioural, psychological and social dimensions of diabetes, with the aim of improving health outcomes, equity and quality of life for people living with or affected by diabetes. Her work is organised around three interconnected areas: 

• Understanding and addressing diabetes and weight stigma and discirmination, including across communication and campagins (#LanguageMatters), healthcare, research, law and policy
• Reducing barriers to medication use and optimal self-care among people with diabetes
• The selection, development, and validation of person-reported outcome and experience measures (PROMs / PREMs) for the assessment of real-world impacts of diabetes as well as expectations and experiences of new diabetes treatments and technologies.
  
  

A defining feature of her work is meaningful community involvement and lived-experience leadership in research (including drawing on her own lived experience of gestational diabetes where relevant) to inform co-design, priority setting and translation across research, education and advocacy.

Her research is also grounded in a strong commitment to interdisciplinary and cross-sector approaches to diabetes innovation. She contributes to scholarship and practice advocating for integrated, multidisciplinary research models that better reflect the complexity of diabetes and its real-world impacts. For example, through her leadership role as ACADI Behavioural Platform Lead, she supports clinical and biomedical researchers to embed lived experience evidence (e.g., PROMs/PREMs; qualiative methods) into research design and evaluation. This work strengthens the capacity of the field to understand the real-world impacts of diabetes, treatments and technologies beyond biomedical endpoints.
