Recognised for his commitment to evidence-based teaching practice, he is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and a corresponding author of a highly cited peer-reviewed medical education publication.

Beyond research and teaching, Dr Smith plays a significant leadership role within the School of Medicine as Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Coordinator.
