BIO

Dominique is Professor in Health Ethics and Professionalism in the School of Medicine at Deakin University, where she leads the Ethics, Law and Professionalism team.

Dominique studied Medicine and Arts as undergraduate degrees, with majors in Philosophy and English. She spent several years working in emergency medicine while pursing postgraduate studies. She completed a PhD in Applied Ethics at the University of Melbourne in 2011 on the topic of markets in human biological materials. Her bioethics research currently focuses primarily on issues related to nephrology, professionalism in healthcare, and to the procurement, use, and distribution of medical products of human origin such as organs and tissues for transplantation, or gametes used in assisted reproductive treatments. She has played a leading role in the development of the Declaration of Istanbul on Organ Trafficking and Transplant Tourism, and the work of the Declaration of Istanbul Custodian Group.

Dominique has extensive experience in teaching ethics and professionalism in online and located modes. In addition to her work as curriculum lead for Ethics, Law and Professionalism in the Deakin MD program, she has designed and developed units focused on Public Health Ethics, the Ethics of Ageing and Issues in End of Life Care, as well as Applied Ethics and Health Law and Ethics. She also designs and delivers tailored ethics programs, such as the Deakin Clinical Ethics shortcourses on Perioperative Care, End of Life Care, Deceased Donation and Organ Transplantation.

Dominique is currently a member of the World Health Organization Expert Advisory Panel for Donation and Transplantation and of the inaugural Lancet Commission on Transplantation. She is past-Chair of the Asia Pacific Bioethics Education Network (APBEN), which aims to promote and support excellence in bioethics and professionalism education in the Asia Pacific region via international collaboration. She is a previous Oceania Councillor for The Transplantation Society and a member of the Doha International Academy for Organ Donation. Dominique serves as an ethics advisor for the International Society of Nephrology. She has worked as
an ethics consultant for the World Health Organization, the Australian Organ and Tissue Authority, the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Qatar National Organ Donation Center, and Western Health. She is an Associate Editor of Transplantation and served on the NHMRC Organ and Tissue Working Committee (2017-2020).

Dominique has authored or co-authored more than 80 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and regularly presents at Australian and international medical and bioethics conferences.
