BIO

Dr MacLeod's research is at the interface between sustainable construction materials and advanced cement-based composites, with both facets contributing to the development of the next generation of construction materials for a net zero 2050. He has developed a broad experimental and numerical modelling expertise in:

  • Cementitious nanocomposites, particularly incorporating carbon nanotubes and graphene
  • Low-carbon cement and concrete materials, especially utilising clays, soils and recycled wastes
  • Fibre-reinforced concrete with recycled and alternative materials
  • Durability, monitoring and service life prediction of concrete structures
  • Multifunctional and self-sensing concrete - particularly thermoelectric energy harvesting concrete technology
  • Cellular lightweight concrete, especially rheology

He has also directly applied his expertise to meet immediate industry challenges through a raft of direct research and consulting projects with industry, such as new concrete formulations, durability monitoring and service life prediction (including of a World Heritage structure), design specifications and standards assessment.
