TEACHING EXPERTISE

My teaching aims to develop students with deep disciplinary knowledge at the same time as it builds students' capacity to use that knowledge in the real world.  My approach to teaching and learning is on designing learning experiences that achieve both these objectives. My teaching is grounded principles of innovation, rigour, relevance and authentic engagement.  I design learning environments that are scaffolded and student-centred, where students engage with current evidence on food choice, eating behaviour, appetite self-regulation, and food environments and apply it to genuine problems. I give students agency over their learning by allowing them to choose assessment and research topics relevant to their own professional contexts, careers and interests.  I also embed contemporary skills into my curriculum, including critical appraisal of evidence, scientific communication and the responsible and ethical use of generative AI, ensuring students are prepared for the current and future careers.

I prioritise high quality teaching materials and learning experiences, and I invest in building the capability of the teaching teams I lead to enable this. My teaching has been recognised through the Council of Academic Public Health Institutions Australasia (CAPHIA) Award for Innovation in Public Health Teaching.

My supervision philosophy is built around the same principles. I aim to develop researchers who are independent, collaborative, creative and productive during their candidature. I create opportunities for students to publish, present and build networks nationally and internationally during their research training. I have supervised 16 Honours and Research Masters students and seven PhD candidates to completion, with six doctoral candidates currently enrolled. I have supervised students on cotutelle arrangements with the University of Copenhagen and Aston University.

I am available to supervise Honours, Masters by Research/Graduate Certificate and PhD candidates in behavioural nutrition, food choice, child eating behaviour, appetite self-regulation, consumer food behaviours, food environments and person-environment interactions. I welcome enquiries from prospective students with interests in these areas.
