DrBilly Griffiths

Dr Billy Griffiths is a historian and Senior DECRA Research Fellow with the Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation. He lectures as part of the Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies program.

He is the bestselling author of Deep Time Dreaming: Uncovering Ancient Australia (Black Inc., 2018), which has won prizes in literature, history and archaeology, including Book of the Year at the NSW Premier's Literary Awards, the Ernest Scott Prize and the Felicia A Holton Book Award (Archaeological Institute of America). His latest book is The First Inventors: How people shaped a continent, with Larissa Behrendt and Sean Ulm (Allen & Unwin, 2026).

He is also the author of The China Breakthrough: Whitlam in the Middle Kingdom, 1971 (Monash University Publishing, 2012) and co-editor with Mike Smith of The Australian Archaeologist's Book of Quotations (Monash University Publishing, 2015). He was the recipient of the 2020 Max Crawford Medal from the Australian Academy of the Humanities and is an Associate Investigator with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Indigenous and Environmental Histories and Futures (CIEHF).
