Associate ProfessorRose Butler

I am an Associate Professor of Sociology who specialises in class, migration and inequality through the lens of relationships and family life. I study how class inequality is made and shapes our social and intimate worlds, and the ways we strive to connect across these faultlines. My latest book Love Across Class (with Eve Vincent) explored the emotional complexities and labour that come with sustained intimate relationships across class. I currently have two research projects: how cross-class friendships are formed and upheld in Australia and the UK (with Sam Friedman), and how class travels across borders to shape migration trajectories and place-based inequalities.

I also continue to work with communities in rural Victoria and NSW to create more equitable futures for young people, most recently supported by the Scanlon Foundation (with Makiko Nishitani). Other of my research has been funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC DECRA), Department of Social Services, Department of Education and Training, First Nations Foundation, University of Sydney (Widening Participation and Outreach), Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research and Data, and Country Arts WA.
