BIO
Sustainable bioproducts researcher | Protein extraction, fermentation & waste valorisation | Deakin University Centre for Sustainable Bioproducts
Dr Samuel King is a Research Scientist at Deakin University's Centre for Sustainable Bioproducts (CSB), specialising in the extraction, characterisation, and commercial translation of high-value proteins and bioactive compounds from food industry waste streams and marine sources. His research transforms underutilised dairy streams, marine byproducts, and agricultural residues into pharmaceutical- and food-ready functional ingredients, including bioactive peptides from animal and plant sources and kelp-derived biostimulants. Samuel's research group employs fermentation, advanced chromatography, and high-resolution LCMS to extract, characterise, and assess the bioavailability of target compounds.
Samuel works at the interface of bioprocess engineering, circular economy innovation, and regulatory-aware product development through Deakin's BioFactory facility. Through a REACH-funded collaboration with ProviCo Australia, and Marine Bioproducts Cooperative Research Centre (MBCRC) partnerships with Ocean2Earth and Auskelp, his research delivers tangible outcomes across the supply chain, from helping restore nutrients in Australian agriculture using marine-derived fertilisers, to producing nutraceuticals from Australian sourced kelp, directly advancing sovereign capability in high-value protein and bioactive ingredient production.
