BIO

I am a quantitative evolutionary biologist working at the intersection of ecology, evolutionary biology, and disease biology. My research focuses on understanding how environmental stressors reshape ecosystem health and influence the emergence of diseases, particularly cancers, across biological systems.

 

My work integrates comparative oncology, evolutionary medicine, and ecological modelling to investigate how organisms respond to environmental stress and how these responses can inform our understanding of disease processes in both wildlife and humans. By combining experimental biology, field ecology, and advanced statistical modelling, I study how pollution, climate change, and other anthropogenic disturbances influence disease risk across ecosystems.

 

A key component of my research program is the development of tractable experimental models, including freshwater planaria, hydra, and other invertebrates, which allow controlled experiments on tumour emergence, regeneration, and organismal responses to environmental stress. These systems provide scalable and cost-effective models for investigating how cumulative environmental pressures affect organismal health and biological resilience.

 

More broadly, my research contributes to the emerging field of eco-evolutionary disease biology, which examines how ecological conditions and evolutionary processes interact to shape disease dynamics. I am particularly interested in questions such as how environmental degradation alters disease risk landscapes, how organisms evolve defenses against cancer, and how disease processes themselves can influence ecological systems.

 

I am actively involved in international collaborations linking research groups in Australia and Europe, including the CNRS–Deakin International Research Program on Cancer Ecology and Evolution. Through these collaborations, I aim to develop integrative frameworks connecting ecosystem health, evolutionary processes, and disease emergence, contributing to global research efforts addressing environmental change and human health.
