BIO
Dr Feifei Chen is an ARC Industry Fellow in the School of Information Technology at Deakin University, whose academic work connects edge-cloud intelligence, artificial intelligence, software engineering education and industry-engaged research. Her research focuses on 5G mobile edge computing, distributed systems, edge-cloud collaborative intelligence and AI-enabled services. A distinctive feature of her work is the development of new research directions in mobile edge computing from the software vendor's perspective, including edge application placement, edge data distribution, edge caching, collaborative edge computing, and edge-cloud collaborative machine learning.
Dr Chen has established an internationally recognised research profile. She has published 110+ high-quality journal and conference papers. Her work appears in leading journals and flagship conferences in computer science and software engineering, including CORE A* and CORE A venues such as TMC, TPDS, TIFS, TSE, TSC, TDSC, CVPR, ICLR, WWW, AAAI, NeurIPS, EuroSys, SIGIR and SIGKDD. Her research has received strong international attention, with 5,900+ Google Scholar citations, an h-index of 43, and citation impact well above the world average for her field. She has been named in Stanford University’s World Top 2% Scientists list and has received recognition including the 2025 SEBE Mid-Career Research Award for Outstanding Global Impacts and Advancement of Knowledge, the School of IT Research Award for Research Performance, and a Distinguished Paper Award at the 2024 International Conference on Service-Oriented Computing.
Her research leadership is also reflected in competitive funding success and industry partnerships. She has secured four ARC grants since 2022, including an ARC Early Career Industry Fellowship, an ARC Discovery Project and two ARC Linkage Projects, with total funding exceeding AUD 1.8 million. Her work with industry partners including Telstra and AIBUILD has supported advances in 5G edge data delivery, real-time service access, AR/VR education platforms and AI-enabled digital innovation.
Beyond her own achievements, Dr Chen’s academic leadership is strongly expressed through mentoring and capacity-building. She has supervised PhD students to timely completion, supported graduates into academic and research careers at institutions including RMIT and CSIRO’s Data61, and mentored early career researchers, new colleagues and women of colour in STEM.
