RESEARCH INTERESTS

Dr Svetlana Stevanovic’s research focuses on air quality engineering, aerosol science, and environmental exposure. Her work explores the behaviour and characteristics of airborne particles and gases across a range of environments, including urban, industrial, and indoor settings. She has particular interest in the development and application of monitoring technologies to better understand pollutant sources, transformations, and potential health impacts.

Her research interests include:

  • Characterisation of aerosols and powders, including morphology, composition, and oxidative potential
  • Monitoring and assessment of emissions from traffic, combustion, and indoor sources
  • Low-cost sensor networks and IoT-enabled systems for real-time air quality monitoring
  • Air pollution mitigation and filtration systems
  • Applications of carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS)
  • Exposure science and the use of emerging metrics, such as oxidative potential, to assess environmental health risks
  • Citizen science approaches and public engagement in air quality monitoring

At Deakin, Dr Stevanovic leads the Air Quality Engineering and Aerosol Research Group, working with colleagues across engineering, environmental science, and public health. Her team studies both gaseous and particulate pollutants (e.g. NOx, SO₂, O₃, CO, VOCs, PM₁, PM₂.₅, PM₁₀) and the meteorological conditions that influence their transport and transformation.

She has experience in the design and operation of ambient air quality monitoring systems and collaborates with research partners, industry, and government to support data-driven approaches to environmental management.

Dr Stevanovic’s research contributes to improved understanding of air pollution and its potential effects on human health and well-being. She maintains an interest in supporting community-led initiatives, promoting environmental literacy, and exploring practical solutions to contemporary air quality challenges.
