ProfessorWendy Timms

Dr Wendy Timms has 30 years of professional experience, mainly in Australia and Canada, on water and waste issues in both agriculture and mining. She has experience across consulting engineering, government, research and education as an environmental engineer and hydrogeologist. She is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Environmental Engineer. 

She is currently a practicing engineer focused on real-world water management challenges. 

Wendy is also an Honorary Professor at Deakin University, and an Adjunct Professor at UNSW. From 2018 to April 2026 she was a full Professor of Environmental Engineering (tenured). Note Wendy is not available for new research supervisions. 

She focuses on water & porous materials, and waste-2-resources projects for a sustainable living planet. Funded research currently includes groundwater recharge, and soil-water interactions with nutrients and carbon (e.g. biochar). She has recently completed water and soil gas monitoring, progressing methods for a deep-well CO₂ injection demo site.  Wendy is also an independent reviewer of environmental and groundwater aspects of mining and field site remediation. 

Wendy led research projects funded by the Australian Research Council and various partners, generating new knowledge and technologies and developing leading practices. Information on publications and current research is available on Google Scholar and ResearchGate.

Wendy was a full Professor in the Deakin School of Engineering in 2018 - April 2026 and affiliated with the Centre for Sustainable Bioproducts (CSB). From 2012 to 2018 Wendy was the Director of Postgraduate Coursework and Senior Lecturer at UNSW School of Mining Engineering and affiliated with Mining Education Australia, the Australian Centre for Sustainable Mining practices (ACSMP), the UNSW Connected Waters Initiative. Wendy was a founding CI in the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training, focused on aquitard research from 2009-2015. Prior to this Wendy worked as a consulting Senior Project Engineer (2003-2011) and as a hydrogeologist for the NSW government (1996-1997), researcher in Saskatchewan Canada (2002-2003) and as a PhD scholar associated with the Cotton CRC (1998-2001). 

Wendy has also worked on projects in NSW, Queensland and Northern Territory, Canada and New Zealand, and inspected project sites around the world including South Africa, Namibia, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Korea, Singapore, Italy, Morroco, Poland, France, Austria, Germany, UK, USA and Chile.
