BIO
Dr. Wei Shi is a Senior Lecturer in Accounting at Deakin University, recognised for his global perspective, innovative teaching, and impactful research that bridges academic scholarship with real-world business and regulatory challenges. With academic and professional experience across Asia, Europe, and North America, he brings a distinctive cross-cultural lens to both research and education. He is committed to preparing the next generation of accounting professionals to thrive in a complex, data-driven, and sustainability-oriented global economy. His work is guided by a belief in scholarship that is rigorous, collaborative, and forward-looking, integrating analytical depth with practical insight, ethical awareness, and international relevance.
Dr. Shi received his PhD in Accounting from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2014. He previously served as an Assistant Professor at the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) and was a visiting scholar at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto in 2018. These international experiences have shaped his research agenda and teaching philosophy, enabling him to cultivate strong global academic collaborations.
His research examines key issues in capital markets, including information flows and their implications for firm policies, the economic consequences of accounting regulation, corporate governance, and ESG reporting. His work has been published in leading journals such as the Journal of Accounting Research, Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory, and Journal of Management Accounting Research. He has also contributed an invited chapter to the Oxford Handbook of Corporate Finance. His research has received recognition through Best Paper Awards in the Financial Accounting stream at the AFAANZ Annual Conference in both 2024 and 2025. He currently serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Contemporary Accounting & Economics, where he supports the journal’s commitment to high-quality and constructive scholarly review. He is also an invited reviewer for leading accounting and finance journals, including the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Business Finance & Accounting, and Journal of Accounting, Auditing & Finance, among others. In recognition of his expertise, Dr. Shi has been invited to serve as an external assessor for tenure evaluations in accounting.
Dr. Shi’s academic profile is distinguished by the integration of research excellence with teaching innovation and academic leadership. He co-developed and implemented a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) initiative within a data analytics unit, partnering Deakin students with peers at a leading Chinese university. This project immerses students in an authentic ESG consulting context, requiring cross-border collaboration in data collection, visualisation, analysis, and business interpretation. Selected as one of five faculty-supported initiatives, the project has achieved exceptional student engagement and evaluation outcomes.
In addition, he has led curriculum renewal in the accounting capstone unit, introducing content to emphasise the translation of financial information into strategic business insights, with a focus on sustainability and governance. By incorporating business simulations and advanced analytics tools, he has enhanced the authenticity and relevance of student learning experiences.
Beyond teaching and research, Dr. Shi contributes actively to academic service and leadership. He supervises doctoral students to successful completion, serves on the faculty academic integrity committee, and engages with industry and standard-setting bodies, including the Australian Accounting Standards Board (AASB). He also plays an important role in teaching coordination and workload planning, while mentoring junior colleagues and fostering collaborative research initiatives.
Dr. Shi has also been active in pursuing research funding, securing support from AFAANZ and multiple Deakin Business School research grants, including a 2025 DEI-focused project.
Overall, Dr. Wei Shi is dedicated to advancing accounting scholarship and education by integrating global perspectives, rigorous research, innovative pedagogy, and meaningful professional engagement.
