Professor Jon Watson is Head of the School of Medicine at Deakin University.
Prof Watson was educated in the UK, and then attended Cambridge University for
his undergraduate degree in medicine, and Oxford University for his clinical
studies. After House Jobs in Oxford and Bath, he went to London for a year
(Hammersmith and Queen Square Hospitals), before moving to Newcastle upon Tyne
in the North East of England for his specialist training in Gastroenterology,
Hepatology and General Medicine. Whilst working in Newcastle upon Tyne he was
awarded a PhD for studies into liver disease. He migrated to Australia in 1997
with his family. Since then, he has worked in Ballarat, Stawell, Newcastle
NSW, and now Geelong. He also has clinical appointments at University Hospital
Geelong, Geelong Private Hospital, St John of God Hospital (Geelong and
Ballarat), the Ballarat Day Procedure Centre, and Stawell Hospital. Prof
Watson has maintained an active research interest in Hepatitis C Virus (HCV)
related liver disease having published on HCV in peer reviewed journals, and
presented on HCV at national and international meetings for the last 20 years,
and has been Meeting Organiser (twice) for the Australian Gastroenterology
Society's annual meeting. He is also a member of the National Examining Panel
of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Prof Watson is a Fellow of
the Royal College of Physicians of London and a Fellow of the Royal
Australasian College of Physicians. He is fully accredited in Endoscopy
(Gastroscopy, Colonoscopy, ERCP and Capsule Endoscopy) and has Specialist
Recognition by the Australian Medical Board to practice in Gastroenterology,
Hepatology and General Medicine.
