RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr James Gong’s research develops a coherent program focused on improving how water infrastructure systems are designed, monitored, and managed. His work supports more sustainable and resilient urban environments. He works across smart water networks, infrastructure asset management, and building-scale water systems. He combines data-driven analytics with engineering insight to improve performance under uncertainty.
A central focus of his research is the development of predictive and data-enabled approaches for water infrastructure management. He integrates sensing, modelling, and optimisation to move systems from reactive management to proactive decision-making. His work has produced new methods for pipeline condition assessment, early warning of pipe breaks and blockages, and water demand modelling across both municipal network and building scales. A distinctive contribution of his research is the translation of advanced analytics into practical tools and design methods that are directly adopted by the industry.
James' research has delivered measurable impact through strong industry collaboration. It has improved water and sewer network reliability and supported more efficient design of water services in buildings. It has also contributed to changes in national codes and guidelines. This work underpins an ongoing agenda to advance digital water infrastructure and predictive asset intelligence, supporting water systems that are lower in carbon and more resilient to climate change.
