DrNateque Mahmood

Dr. Nateque Mahmood is an associate professor and head of discipline of Construction Management in the School of Architecture and Built Environment at Deakin University, where he has been a pivotal figure in advancing the fields of construction management and infrastructure asset management. With a robust academic and professional background, Dr. Mahmood brings over 14 years of extensive experience in civil and residential construction to his role.

Dr. Mahmood completed his Ph.D. at the University of Tokyo, Japan, graduating in 2009. His doctoral research focused on innovative approaches to facility management and infrastructure asset management, positioning him as a leading scholar in these areas. Prior to his Ph.D., he earned a Master of Engineering in Construction Engineering and Infrastructure Management from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, in 2006, and a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Bangladesh, in 2004.

A chartered professional civil engineer specialising in leadership and management, Dr. Mahmood has a distinguished career marked by his contributions to both academia and industry. He has published over 80 journal and conference papers, reflecting his expertise in facility management, infrastructure asset management, and construction management. His scholarly work has significantly influenced contemporary practices and policies within these fields.

From 2021 to 2024, Dr. Mahmood served as the Course Director for the Bachelor of Construction Management (Honours). He oversaw program management, academic decision-making, and student pastoral care. His responsibilities included leading the moderation and maintenance of academic standards and developing curricula that aligned with Deakin’s framework and external accreditation requirements. His leadership was instrumental in reaccreditation projects during that period, including those for RICS, AIB, and CIOB.

Before joining Deakin University, Dr. Mahmood served as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Southern Queensland. His research experience spans several prestigious projects, including the University of Tokyo’s research initiatives, CRC for Infrastructure and Engineering Asset Management (CIEAM), the Airport Metropolis Project (ARC Linkage), and a Strategic Asset Management project with DILGP in Australia.

Dr. Mahmood has demonstrated a strong capacity for securing research funding, having obtained over $200,000 in external competitive grants and $50,000 in internal funding over the past five years. His expertise in commercial research projects and industry partnerships has been critical in proposing and developing several ARC linkage projects, CRC-P initiatives, and industry grants.

Dr. Mahmood's active involvement in various committees and forums has enriched his understanding of the policies, procedures, and best practices in facility management, infrastructure asset management, and construction management. His career reflects a deep commitment to advancing both theoretical and practical aspects of these fields, making him a respected leader and innovator in his domain.
