TEACHING EXPERTISE
Politics and Policy, Sociology, Law, and Religion.
Expertise Summary
I am a political sociologist concerned primarily with the use (and abuse) of power by social actors. My primary research expertise focuses on politically and religiously motivated violence.
Whilst I have written on radicalization, I prefer to focus on deeper structural factors shaping the appeal of violent extremism including citizenship, ideologies, economies, institutions, masculinities and rule of law. I contrast this body of work on societal challenges with a focus on societal 'solutions', with my other key areas of focus and expertise being emergent forms of citizenship, positive political participation and law and religion.
I supervise PhD students that ask interesting and timely questions about the relationship between politics, religion, citizenship and the rule of law.
