DrPenny Gleeson

Dr Penny Gleeson is a Lecturer at Deakin Law School. Penny's expertise is in public health law, regulation, public law, new health technologies and ethics.

Her book (The Regulation of Medical Products: Dope, Drugs and Devices, Routledge, December 2024) examines the political legitimacy of the regulation of therapeutic goods, with a particular focus on medicinal cannabis, medical abortion and mesh devices. Penny has published in leading journals and has spoken at domestic and international conferences, including by invitation.

Penny is a Chief Investigator on a five year Linkage Grant project funded by the Australian Research Council on 'The Australian Cancer Journey in Historical Perspective'. It will explore Australia's response to cancer, including by examining national efforts towards cancer control through law and policy.

Penny contributed to multiple publications as part of the A-GLIMMER Project, which examined life insurance, genetic testing and discrimination. The project was funded by the Medical Research Future Fund and led to legislative reform.

Penny teaches in the JD and LLB programs in tort law and misleading conduct. She is also Convenor of the Deakin Law School Academic Excellence Program. Penny aims to inspire, support and prepare students for fulfiling professional lives. Penny has also contributed to postgraduate teaching programs in health and law.

Penny has a strong interest in University governance and policy. She is an elected staff member of the Faculty Board and a member of the Faculty Human Research Ethics Group. Penny was previously the Coordinator of Deakin Law School's Recognition of Prior Learning (LLB).

Penny holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne and an LLM from the University of Cambridge. She was an executive in the Victorian public service and continues to contribute to policy and law reform.
