BIO

Sahan Dissanayake received the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree in Mechanical Engineering from Monash University, Melbourne, VIC, Australia, in 2020. He completed his doctoral research in Biomedical Engineering with the School of Engineering, Deakin University, Geelong, VIC, Australia, and his Ph.D. thesis is currently under review. His doctoral research focused on the application of machine learning for the diagnosis and prognosis of rare hereditary neurodegenerative conditions, with particular emphasis on probabilistic machine learning approaches for estimating the severity of movement disorders.

From 2021 to 2024, he worked as a Research Assistant, and from 2024 to 2025 as a Research Fellow, with the Network Sensing and Biomedical Engineering Lab at Deakin University, where he contributed to interdisciplinary research involving machine learning, biomedical data analysis, and medical device development. His work included the development and validation of the Ataxia Instrumented Measurement System (AIMS), collaboration with clinicians on the assessment of neurodegenerative diseases, and participation in research projects involving Friedreich's Ataxia and essential tremor. From 2025 to 2026, he subsequently worked as a Mechanical Engineer with the same research group, supporting data analysis, machine learning development, device production, verification, and quality assurance for AIMS devices deployed across national and international clinical sites.

Sahan is currently an Associate Lecturer in Mechatronics Engineering with the School of Engineering, Deakin University. He is involved in teaching undergraduate units in data communications, machine design, programming for engineers, electromechanical systems, and virtual and augmented interfaces. His research interests include machine learning, biomedical engineering, medical device development, biomedical data analysis, wearable and inertial sensing, movement disorder assessment, mechatronics, and virtual and augmented reality technologies.
