TEACHING EXPERTISE
Teaching Philosophy and Approach
Associate Professor Stuart Warmington believes that the purpose of higher education extends beyond the transfer of knowledge to the preparation of professionals and researchers who are curious, informed, and committed to lifelong learning. His teaching philosophy is founded on the view that students learn most effectively when challenged to take increasing ownership of their learning, critically evaluate evidence, solve authentic problems, and apply knowledge within professional and research contexts.
Drawing on experience across teaching, research, curriculum leadership, and professional accreditation, he seeks to create learning environments that encourage curiosity, accountability, reflective practice, and intellectual growth. His goal is not simply to teach disciplinary knowledge, but to help students develop the confidence, independence, and practical skills required to succeed in professional practice, research, and lifelong learning. This philosophy underpins his teaching, supervision, mentoring, and academic leadership activities.
Areas of Teaching Expertise
Stuart's teaching expertise is grounded in Exercise and Sport Science and spans physiology, exercise physiology, muscle physiology, and the physiology of sport performance across undergraduate and postgraduate education. His expertise also extends to curriculum design, professional accreditation, and the integration of research-informed learning, with a sustained focus on preparing graduates for professional practice and further research training.
Research Education and Supervision
A particular area of expertise is the development of student research capability. Through teaching, supervision, and research training, Stuart develops students as independent and critically reflective researchers. His approach emphasises student ownership of the research process, encouraging learners to confidently evaluate and apply evidence, navigate feedback, make informed decisions, and contribute thoughtfully to scholarly discussion.
This philosophy is reflected in his work with Honours, Masters, and Higher Degree by Research students, and through leadership of the Master of Applied Sport Science research project unit (HSE739). In these roles, he guides students through the research process, helps them build productive supervisory relationships, and progressively develops the confidence and autonomy required to take ownership of their projects and professional development.
Teaching Leadership and Impact
Stuart's teaching contributions are characterised by sustained leadership in curriculum design, course development, accreditation, and academic governance. He has contributed to the design, review, and renewal of programs, the development of systems that support evidence-informed teaching practice, and initiatives that enhance learning experiences across Exercise and Sport Science education. Through these activities, he has helped strengthen curriculum quality, support professional accreditation, and promote continuous improvement in teaching and learning.
central aspect of this work has been the development of capability in others. Through mentoring Course Directors, supporting academic staff, and leading teaching and learning initiatives, he has contributed to the development of teaching leadership, curriculum quality, and sustainable academic practice within the School and broader discipline.
