DrClaudio Bozzi

Claudio Bozzi (LLB, Hons, BA, Hons, PhD Edinburgh, GCHE, Deakin) is Lecturer in the Deakin Law School. His PhD at the University of Edinburgh was funded by the Rae and Edith Bennett Travelling Scholarship, University of Melbourne. He was Senior Associate, Supreme Court of Victoria from 2004 to 2005, to Justice Peter Vickery QC. Prior to joining the Deakin Law School in 2009, he was Sessional Lecturer in the Faculty of Law, University of Melbourne from 2005 -2006.

Claudio’s research focus is maritime law, recognized by invitations to publish in leading journals and to speak at Australian and international conferences. He has published in the leading international maritime law journal Lloyds Maritime and Commercial Law Quarterly and also in the Australian and New Zealand Maritime Law Journal. In 2018 he convened the international law conference Maritime Order in the Indian Ocean at Deakin University, funded by Deakin’s Centre of the Legal Profession (COLP) with papers from leading maritime law, security and environmental researchers and speakers. His current research focus is on the security of critical infrastructure. He is convening a workshop ‘Ports and Critical Infrastructure: Security and Resilience’, 10 December, 2026, funded by a grant from Deakin’s Centre for Law as Protection and supported by Australian port authorities and maritime stakeholders.

Claudio is a recognised authority on civil procedure in Victoria, having published a key reference text Principles of Civil Procedure in Victoria, Thompson Reuters, third edition, 2022 and a specialist monograph Third Party Proceedings and Contributions, Leo Cussen Institute, 2006. He co-authored the New Rules of Procedure for the Technology, Engineering and Construction Court, Supreme Court of Victoria, 2008, and The Technology, Engineering and Constructions List, Practice Note No.2, Supreme Court of Victoria, 2009.

He is also co-author of two books Australian Commercial Law, second edition, 2020, and Contract Law: Text and Cases, third edition, 2022 and a an influential government-funded study on anti-doping law and policy, 2012. Claudio has published articles and reviews in leading journals, including the Law Institute Journal (Victoria), Deakin Law Review and The Journal Jurisprudence, and has presented at international and national conferences on maritime law, piracy, jurisprudence, professional regulation, international trade law, internet law and clinical legal education.

Claudio has taught across a wide range of law subjects and specialises in Civil Procedure, Maritime Law, Equity and Trusts and International Commercial Law. He has led several innovatory teaching initiatives, with an emphasis on bridging law education and the legal profession, including as founding director of the Venture Law Clinic at Deakin Law School in the CBD, 2016, initiating an international clinical exchange program with students from UK Law schools and, since 2016, as academic supervisor of the Alfred Deakin International Commercial Arbitration (ICA) Moot.

Claudio collaborates in a number of interdisciplinary research projects including the 'Indian Small, Medium and Micro Industries' project with the SME Research Centre, Deakin Business School, the 'Innovation Corridors' project with the Deakin Business School, and the 'Blue Economy' project with the International University, Vietnam. Claudio has initiated research collaborations beyond the university, 'Balancing and Optimising Critical Infrastructure Security' with Prof Jill Slay of the SmartSat Co-operative Research Centre, and The Ukraine War in Law with Kings College, London, Department of War Studies, and the University of Bologna, Department of Political and Social Sciences.

He has been editor of two peer-reviewed journals, the Deakin Law Review and the Melbourne Journal of International Law and received the Deakin University Media Award in 2011. Claudio is a frequent media commentator on matters relating to maritime law, security, new technologies and the environment. His article in The Conversation, 2025, on Chinese port investment strategy attracted more than 62,000 readers internationally.

Claudio has practiced as a barrister since 2002. He holds a number of honorary legal counsel positions in the community, representing legal, business, environmental and charity organisations and has provided advisory opinions for the International Commission of Jurists, Australia.
