TEACHING EXPERTISE
I have been involved in teaching-related activities since first commencing my PhD studies at The University of Melbourne in 1997 when I undertook tutoring roles in a range of Modern History subjects. From 2000 to 2008, I was engaged in a number of student-centred roles at Trinity College at The University of Melbourne, including as its first Indigenous Programs Officer, in which role I helped establish Trinity's Indigenous program in conjunction with the University.
Between 2008 and 2017 my main focus at Deakin was on research, but from 2017 until now I have been intensely focused on teaching activities. With my colleague Associate Professor Helen Gardner, in 2017 I pioneered a unit teaching about Australia's colonial engagement with Papua New Guinea, and have also been able to educate students about this vital aspect of Australian history in several other units, including the capstone unit in the History major, Making History, and its successor unit, History from Here. I have been the Coordinator of the Honours program for History students since 2020, and have chaired the entry-level History unit, The Modern World: Globalisation and Fragmentation from 2022 to 2024.
