BIO
Saman A. Gorji is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Renewable Energy Engineering in Deakin University’s School of Engineering and Director of its Centre for Smart Power and Energy Research (CSPER). His research focuses on power-electronic converters and the control and integration of renewable energy systems, spanning battery storage, grid-forming inverters, microgrids and green hydrogen.
At Deakin, he leads industry-linked research on battery integration and renewable microgrids, using the University’s Renewable Energy Microgrid for system testing and validation. His industry research has involved collaborations with Origin Energy, Horizon Power and ArcActive. Previously, at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), he contributed to the electrical design of the ARENA-supported H2Xport hydrogen pilot and led research on fully DC microgrids for green hydrogen production through the Future Energy Exports Cooperative Research Centre.
Alongside his engineering research, he contributes technical evidence on energy planning and regulation through submissions to the Australian Energy Market Operator and Australian Energy Regulator. He has also given evidence to the Victorian Parliament’s inquiry into renewable and affordable energy for apartments.
Saman has a PhD in electrical engineering from Swinburne University of Technology with previous industry-supported research appointments at Swinburne and QUT. He has supervised six PhD candidates and one master’s by research candidate to completion, and currently supervises doctoral research in power electronics and renewable energy systems.
Saman is a Fellow of Engineers Australia and the Higher Education Academy, and a Senior Member of IEEE. His recognition includes a CSIRO International Hydrogen Research Fellowship in 2024 and the 2025 Excellence in Industry-Engaged Project Delivery Award from Deakin’s Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment and several IEEE best paper awards from 2014-2016.
