ProfessorTonda Hughes

Tonda Hughes, RN, PhD, FAAN is Professor and Associate Dean for Global Health
in the College of Nursing and Adjunct Professor in the School of Public Health
at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).

Dr. Hughes has a distinguished career in substance abuse research focusing on
women and is an internationally recognized expert in sexual minority (i.e.,
lesbian and bisexual) women's health. Her pioneering studies on the
predictors and consequences of alcohol use among sexual minority women is
funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and is the world's longest
running longitudinal study of alcohol use and health among sexual minority
women.

Dr. Hughes leads or co-leads several international capacity building projects,
has published more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and
other scholarly publications and has presented numerous scientific papers,
workshops, invited talks at national and international research conferences.
She consults with many agencies and institutes around the world

Dr. Hughes has received many notable awards and has been honored as an
outstanding alumna of both Eastern Kentucky University and the University of
Kentucky, and by induction into the Chicago Institute of Medicine, the Chicago
Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame, the University of Kentucky, College of Nursing's
Hall of Fame, and the American Academy of Nursing. Dr Hughes is a University
of Illinois faculty Scholar and was recently inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau
International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame, a recognition given to fewer than
100 nurses worldwide.
